Archery is a sport you can take up at any age, and it is great fun, as long as you can hold a bow, you can fire an arrow. It’s a sport for all and you can join a club from the age of 8 – 80 years, yes there are still archers shooting in their 80s.

Archery is one of the oldest sports known to the human race and was regarded by many cultures as an art. You may have noticed that it figures repeatedly in Roman and Greek mythology.

It’s a great activity for developing self confidence and is fast becoming a popular team building activity that anyone can have a go at.

It’s a very active sport both in competition and as a hobby but it really is a sport of skill, not strength.

Why- because it relies heavily on good technique rather than brute force, or sheer speed and therefore is equally suited to both sexes.

I have always considered archery as an individual sport, by that I mean you are always competing against yourself, to improve your own performance.

Field archery is the closest we get to hunting with a bow and arrow. This is a challenging outdoor discipline in which the archer takes on the terrain as well as the target.  It involves shooting at targets of varying (and often unmarked) distance, often in woodland and rough terrain.

In contrast to this, archery competitions are shot indoors at World level and it is one of the few sports that allow disabled sportsmen and women the opportunity to compete on equal terms with able-bodied shooters.

Archery kits are a great way to introduce the sport without a big expense.  It’s a sport that suits everybody, young and old, males and females.

You will probably be aware that there are several different types of bows that can be used in archery such as the recurve bow, longbow and crossbow, I will go into more detail on these bows in my following article and give you all the information you’ll need on each bow.

Archery is a fun sport and I thoroughly recommend it.

The Compound Bow was invented in 1966 in the USA and was made with two categories of shooters in mind, hunters and target shooters.

It’s a modern development of the bow which uses a lever system of cables, wheels and cams to draw the limbs back.

They are certainly much more efficient than other bows at transforming stored energy into arrow speed in fact these bows are designed for high arrow velocity, excellent accuracy and ease of use.

One of the biggest advantages to the compound bow is that the shooter does not have to hold the "pull weight" when the bow is fully drawn.

The bow gives you the option to adjust the draw strength within certain limits simply by changing the pulleys and cams on the bow; they often have a peak weight of up to 60lbs, but may only need 15-20lbs to hold the arrow before firing it.

Modern compound bows are significantly shorter than the equivalent recurve allowing them to be taken more easily around forests on field archery rounds etc. Lengths can vary from 840mm to 1220mm (33 to 48 inches) measured from axle to axle.

In tournaments, compound shooters are allowed to use a certain amount of magnification in the bow sight and they can also use a rear sight (known as a peep sight) and can use a mechanical release aid rather than fingers. This is not allowed in other bow classes.

The arrows used with compound bows differ very little from arrows shot by recurve archers but the big difference is that arrows leave a compound bow at an incredible average speed of 275-290 feet per second, which makes them the fastest by far.

Conclusion

Buying a compound bow is certainly a good investment for any archer; it is the most dominant type of bow.

Compound bows are also shot at world level in standard target competitions and will probably become fully allowed at the Olympics (at the moment only 'recurve' or Olympic style bows are shot). So get practicing now.

Crossbow

Crossbows are deadly accurate and have a firing range longer than a traditional longbow. Crossbows can be found in many styles and sizes from pistol grip crossbows to full size military models. Crossbows are easier to aim than longbows because the crossbowman doesn't have to use a hand to hold the string back while aiming. Crossbows require less upper body strength to operate as well. Crossbows are mostly used for target shooting in modern archery.

Crossbows today are made of many materials, including wood, metals and polymer Crossbows are believed to have been invented by the Chinese in the 4th century BC.

The Recurve bow is the one most commonly seen on TV in the Olympics. It is basically same as the traditional bow but the ends of the limbs are curved for more forceful shot.

Recurve bows are designed to curve away from the user when drawn, resulting in faster arrows and more forceful shots. They are often made from modern materials such as fibreglass.

This bow is a hard hitting, smooth and reliable bow that is well suited for bow hunting, target archery, and stump shooting.

Bow weights for recurves typically range from 28 lbs to 45 lbs.

Archery Longbow

Longbows were developed by the Normans around 1,000 years ago.

The longbow which is made from a single natural piece of wood, is the type of bow Robin Hood traditionally used and is simply a stick with a string (although great skill is required to make them) and is taller than the archer and shot off the hand.

Yew is the only widespread timber that will make good self longbows, and has been the main wood used in since Neolithic times.

Traditional style longbows can be a bit difficult and time consuming to master, but have their benefits.

It may interest you to know that arrows can leave a longbow at over 140mph, and their effective range can be as great as 180 metres. That’s impressive.
